Program Abstract:
This interactive, informational session introduces an evidence-based mindfulness curriculum developed by the Mindfulness Institute for Emerging Adults (MIEA) and validated through a randomized controlled trial with university students at Duke University. The session will be facilitated by certified mindfulness instructors from the University Health Center who will share research-informed content and lead brief guided mindfulness practices to demonstrate why this developmentally tailored program is uniquely effective for today’s college population. Participants will leave with practical skills, increased awareness of campus-based mindfulness offerings, and a clearer understanding of how mindfulness supports well-being.

Program Description:
This session introduces participants to the concept of mindfulness, and how it can be used as a tool to relieve stress and build resilience. The Intro to Mindfulness course developed by the Mindfulness Institute for Emerging Adults (MIEA) is an evidence-based program that provides the opportunity to create a personal mindfulness practice while also building connection and community. Designed with emerging adults in mind, Intro to Mindfulness directly addresses the lived experiences of college students. Each class invites MIEA students to take time out of their week to pause and focus on the present moment.

Participants will be given the opportunity to learn more about MIEA from certified mindfulness instructors based in the University of Maryland Health Center. The facilitators will walk the audience through the science behind mindfulness, the Intro Mindfulness curriculum, and the data supporting MIEA. Each participant will also get the opportunity to participate in a brief practice to experience the benefits of mindfulness firsthand.
